What is sports massage like?

Sports massage is massage tailored to the demands of exercise, training, or a particular sport. It may focus on muscles that feel overloaded, support relaxation, or temporarily reduce post-exercise soreness. It is not necessarily painful or only for athletes, and it does not replace injury assessment, rehabilitation, sleep, or sensible training progression.

The timing changes the approach

Before activity: Keep the goal comfortable readiness. An unfamiliar intense session immediately before competition may leave you sore or alter how you feel during performance.

After activity: Gentle or moderate work may help comfort, but dehydrated, overheated, injured, or unusually weak athletes need recovery or medical evaluation first.

Between training sessions: A focused appointment can address recurring tightness while you also review workload, technique, and recovery habits.

Give useful training information

Tell the therapist what you train, when your next demanding session occurs, which movement hurts, and whether symptoms began gradually or suddenly. A sharp pain during a sprint needs a different response from generalized soreness the day after unfamiliar exercise.

Judge the result practically

Track comfort during walking, lifting, running, or sport-specific movements. Massage should not be used to mask pain so you can continue an activity that is causing injury.

Tip: Ask for pressure that fits your training calendar. More soreness from the appointment is not evidence of better recovery, and no massage can compensate for repeatedly increasing training faster than your body tolerates.
