What is cupping or ventosa?

Cupping, often called ventosa in the Philippines, uses cups to create suction on the skin. Dry cupping leaves the skin intact; wet cupping involves breaking the skin and drawing blood. Some people report temporary pain relief, but evidence is limited, and suction marks do not show that toxins or illness have been removed.

What the suction does

The cup draws skin and superficial tissues upward, unlike massage that primarily presses downward. This can cause circular discoloration, tenderness, and small blood-vessel injury. Some techniques move cups across lubricated skin; others leave them in place briefly.

Understand the risks

Possible problems include bruising, blisters, burns when heat is used, skin infection, and persistent discoloration. Wet cupping adds risks related to bleeding and blood exposure. Equipment hygiene and practitioner training are essential, but they do not eliminate every risk.

Decide whether it fits your situation

Avoid treating wounds, irritated skin, unexplained swelling, or a suspected blood clot. People taking blood thinners or living with bleeding disorders, fragile skin, or other significant medical conditions should seek individualized advice. Do not attempt fire cupping or skin cutting at home.

Tip: Ask whether the proposed service is dry or wet cupping and whether heat will be used. These are meaningful differences. You can choose ordinary massage instead; stronger suction and darker marks do not establish a better result.

Commonly asked questions

What do ventosa marks mean?

Ventosa marks are usually circular areas of discoloration caused by suction affecting small blood vessels in and beneath the skin. Their color varies with suction strength, duration, skin characteristics, and individual bruising tendency. They do not reliably measure toxins, poor circulation, the severity of illness, or how successful the treatment was.

The massage and aroma may help some people relax, but essential oils do not make the treatment a cure for illness. The scent, ingredients, and concentration should suit your preferences, allergies, and health circumstances.

What is the difference between oil massage and dry massage?

Oil massage uses a lubricant to support smooth gliding strokes on exposed skin, while dry massage uses contact without oil, often through clothing. Dry techniques may include compression, kneading, or assisted movement. Neither is automatically better; choose according to your goals, skin tolerance, clothing preferences, and the specific technique being offered.
