What is aromatherapy massage?

Aromatherapy massage combines massage with scented products containing essential oils, usually diluted in a carrier oil. The massage and aroma may help some people relax, but essential oils do not make the treatment a cure for illness. The scent, ingredients, and concentration should suit your preferences, allergies, and health circumstances.

What happens during a session

The therapist discusses your goals and offers a product or scent, then uses an agreed massage technique. Aromatherapy describes the use of aroma; it does not specify how firm the massage will be. Ask separately about pressure, treatment areas, and whether fragrance will be applied to the skin or diffused into the room.

Decide whether fragrance adds anything for you

If you dislike a scent, it triggers headaches, or your breathing becomes uncomfortable, request a fragrance-free session. You do not need to tolerate it to obtain the benefits of massage. People with sensitive skin, asthma triggered by scents, pregnancy, or specific medical concerns should discuss product suitability before use.

Keep expectations realistic

Relaxation is a reasonable goal. Claims that a blend balances hormones, treats infections, detoxifies organs, or replaces prescribed treatment need reliable clinical evidence and should not be assumed true.

Tip: Ask to see the actual ingredient label. A name such as “sleep blend” describes marketing or intended use, not a standardized formula. Never ingest a massage essential oil or apply it undiluted because it smells mild.

Commonly asked questions

What is the difference between oil massage and dry massage?

Oil massage uses a lubricant to support smooth gliding strokes on exposed skin, while dry massage uses contact without oil, often through clothing. Dry techniques may include compression, kneading, or assisted movement. Neither is automatically better; choose according to your goals, skin tolerance, clothing preferences, and the specific technique being offered.

Thai massage usually combines pressure, compression, and assisted stretches while you remain clothed, often on a padded floor mat. Sessions vary in intensity, and stretching should always be adapted to your mobility, injuries, and preferences.
