What should you expect at your first massage?

At your first massage, expect a discussion of your goals and health, an explanation of the treatment, and privacy while you get ready. Your massage therapist should agree on pressure, body areas, clothing, and draping with you. You remain in control and can ask for changes, take a break, or stop at any time.

What usually happens

  1. Arrival and intake. Explain what you want from the visit and disclose relevant symptoms, medicines, injuries, allergies, or pregnancy.
  2. Planning. Ask what the massage includes, how long the hands-on portion lasts, and which positions you will use.
  3. Getting ready. Remove only clothing you are comfortable removing. The therapist should give you privacy and explain how to position yourself beneath the covering.
  4. Treatment. Pressure should begin at a manageable level. Speak up when the therapist changes areas because your back and calves may tolerate different pressure.
  5. Finishing. Take time to sit up, dress, and discuss any unexpected reaction.

Helpful phrases for a first visit

“This is my first massage, so please explain before changing position.”

“I prefer light pressure and would like to keep my underwear on.”

“Please leave my abdomen and feet out of the session.”

Tip: You do not need to make conversation, shave, endure pain, or know the names of techniques. A useful first appointment is one in which you feel informed and comfortable, not one that includes the greatest number of techniques.

Commonly asked questions

What happens to your body during a massage?

During massage, pressure moves the skin and soft tissues and stimulates sensory nerves that influence how your brain interprets touch and discomfort. You may breathe more slowly, feel less tense, or notice temporary warmth and easier movement. Responses vary, and massage does not squeeze toxins from muscles or permanently realign your body.
