Is massage safe during pregnancy?

Massage can be appropriate during an uncomplicated pregnancy when a trained therapist adapts positioning and treatment to your needs. Tell the therapist about the pregnancy, even early on. Seek maternity advice before treatment if you have complications, and postpone massage for warning symptoms such as bleeding, severe headache, abdominal pain, or sudden swelling.

Choose a pregnancy-trained therapist

Ask how they adapt positions, screen for complications, and handle symptoms during treatment. A service name alone does not establish appropriate training.

Side-lying with support is often comfortable. As pregnancy progresses, prolonged flat-on-back positioning may cause symptoms in some people and should be changed. Avoid abdominal compression, forced stretches, and painful work.

Share changes at every visit

Mention new blood-pressure concerns, calf symptoms, reduced fetal movement, or restrictions from your maternity team. A previously comfortable session does not mean the same plan remains suitable throughout pregnancy.

Tip: You can choose a shorter session and change position whenever needed. There is no benefit in tolerating dizziness or breathlessness to finish a routine.

Massage should not be used to induce labor, correct the baby’s position, or evaluate pregnancy complications outside qualified maternity care. Seek urgent help when warning symptoms occur rather than waiting for a scheduled appointment.

Commonly asked questions

Is massage safe during a gout flare?

Do not massage a joint during an acute gout flare. The inflamed area may be extremely sensitive, and pressure can increase pain without removing urate crystals. Rest and protect the joint, follow your prescribed flare treatment, and seek assessment for a first attack or symptoms that could indicate joint infection, especially fever or feeling unwell.

Can you get a massage during your period?

You can usually receive massage during your period if you feel comfortable and have no concerning symptoms. Menstruation itself is not a reason to cancel. Choose pressure and positions that suit you, request bathroom breaks as needed, and skip abdominal work if it is uncomfortable. Severe or unusual pelvic pain needs assessment rather than massage.

Is massage safe if you take blood thinners?

Massage may be possible while taking blood thinners, but pressure and techniques often need modification because bruising and bleeding can occur more easily. Tell the therapist which medicine you take and why. Avoid deep, aggressive work unless your treating clinician considers it appropriate, and never stop or skip prescribed medication to make a massage appointment possible.

Is massage safe if you have varicose veins?

Varicose veins do not automatically prevent all massage, but direct deep pressure over enlarged or painful veins should be avoided. Massage does not repair faulty vein valves or remove varicose veins. New redness, warmth, swelling, a hard tender vein, or sudden leg pain needs assessment before treatment because another vascular problem may be present.
