Can massage help people with fibromyalgia?

Massage may help some people with fibromyalgia manage pain, relaxation, or wellbeing, but responses vary and pressure that feels comfortable to others may trigger a flare. Start with a short, gentle session and clear boundaries. Use massage alongside your broader care plan, and adjust according to how you feel during the following days.

Begin below your tolerance limit

Tell the therapist about touch sensitivity, fatigue, sleep problems, and previous reactions. Broad, predictable contact may be easier to tolerate than concentrated pressure. You can stay clothed, choose only one area, or ask for periods of still touch.

Evaluate the delayed response

Feeling good on the table is not the only measure. Notice fatigue, pain, sleep, and daily function over the next day or two. If symptoms flare, reduce duration, pressure, or the number of areas treated next time—or stop if massage is not helpful.

Avoid misleading explanations

Fibromyalgia pain does not mean the muscles are full of toxins or that painful pressure is required to remove them. A treatment should not be justified by asking you to push through significant distress.

Tip: Agree on a clear signal for pausing before the session starts. On a day when symptoms are unusually severe, postponing may be more useful than trying to maintain a fixed appointment schedule.

Coordinate persistent symptom changes with the clinician managing your condition.

Commonly asked questions

Can massage help with muscle knots?

Massage can sometimes reduce tenderness and the feeling of tightness in an area commonly called a muscle knot. It does not literally untie muscle fibers, and a palpable lump is not automatically a knot. Use comfortable pressure, avoid repeatedly digging into the spot, and have an unexplained or changing lump assessed.

Can massage help with jaw tension?

Gentle massage can help some people with tense jaw muscles, particularly when clenching contributes to discomfort. It should remain comfortable and focus on external muscles unless a qualified practitioner has specific training for intraoral treatment. Persistent jaw pain, locking, swelling, or difficulty eating needs dental or medical assessment rather than stronger massage.

Can massage help with rounded shoulders?

Massage may ease discomfort around the chest, shoulders, and upper back, but it does not permanently correct rounded shoulders by itself. Shoulder position varies naturally and is not automatically harmful. If you want more comfortable movement or endurance, combine symptom relief with suitable strengthening, movement variety, and changes to activities that cause discomfort.

Does massage help with posture?

Massage may make it easier to sit or move comfortably by reducing muscular discomfort, but it does not reliably create a permanent ideal posture. Posture varies with anatomy, activity, fatigue, and preference. Aim for comfortable movement and the ability to change positions, supported by appropriate exercise and practical adjustments to daily tasks.
